Outback Australia is a remote arid area covering a very large part of Australia.  Early explorers experienced great difficulties in these harsh regions although many expeditions and feats were accomplished such as the Overland Telegraph (1870s), Canning Stock Route (early 1900s) and more recently, the Gunbarrel Hwy and other roads around the rocket testing area of Woomera, SA during 1950s. Outback industries can include agriculture (sheep & cattle grazing in marginal areas), mining of metals - Broken Hill (NSW), Pilbara (WA), opals - Coober Pedy (SA), Lightning Ridge (NSW), diamonds -Kimberley (WA) and tourism. Thousands of annual visitors flock to certain Outback attractions such as Uluru, Alice Springs, Coober Pedy, the Kimberleys, Birdsville and many others.
